Try It Wednesday

So, this week you’re getting a two-for! Yep, that’s right, I’m doing another Try It!

This is for two reasons: 1., I couldn’t think of anything to blog about today and 2., I really wanted to try this!

Before Huff the Hubs and I went to London, I went shopping for some cute canvas shoes. I wanted comfortable walking shoes that were also cute (and not as expensive as TOMs). So I hit up Payless and got these!

I really liked how they felt on my feet and plus, I thought they were super cute. And, since they’re beige, they go with basically every outfit I was planning on taking on the trip. Unfortunately, since they’re beige, they get dirty fast. Especially when you take the Underground and dirt is kicked up from the rails. (Seriously. At the end of the day, we’d blow our noses and it was black. TMI, but now you get the picture).

So my cute new shoes looked like this after a week in London:

Tisk, tisk.

Tisk, tisk.

Thankfully, I found a video that helped me get them clean!

All I needed was:

~a toothbrush

~a bowl of 1/4 cup water

~1/4 cup baking soda

~washing machine

First, I took the toothbrush and wiped it over the dirtiest parts of the shoes, getting rid of the tougher clumps of dirt and such. Then, I poured 1/4 cup baking soda into a bowl with 1/4 cup water. I mixed up the paste and scrubbed the bottom of my shoes (just to help get all that muck off so it wouldn’t be in my washing machine) and the sides of the sole.

Then, I started the washing machine. I turned it to a cold wash on the gentle cycle. I let it fill up 1/4 of the way and poured in my detergent (if your shoes are really yucky, you can pretreat before this step). Then, when the machine was 3/4 of the way full, I dropped in my shoes.

Twenty minutes later, voila! My shoes came out, looking clean and pretty:

Pretty shoes!

The video recommended I place my shoes outside, not indoors on a vent or with a blow dryer. This is so the shoes wouldn’t shrink. However, its been really rainy lately AND there are construction workers EVERYWHERE doing cleanup from the May 20th tornado, I just knew they’d get dirty again. So they’re drying inside on a towel.

You may not be able to tell much of a difference since you’re looking at it from a photo, but trust me. In person, they look SUPER clean and so much better! So if your TOMs, Keds, or Payless specials are looking a little dingy, toss ’em in the washer! Its Huffman Post approved!
