Her’s Day Thursday

hersday thursday4

Today’s Her’s Day Thursday leading lady has a career that is on pointe. She has really raised the barre for herself (I’m cracking up at my hilarious wordplay; you’ll get it in a second becaaaause…). I’m talking about Misty Copeland!

NEW YORK, NEW YORK--MAY 22, 2014--Prima ballerina Misty Copeland will be a make history as the 1st African-American woman to dance the lead role of Swanilda in the famous ballet Coppelia. She will also be a guest judge on "So You Think You Can Dance." Portrait of Copeland taken at Lincoln Center of Mary 22, 2014. (Carolyn Cole/Los Angeles Times)

Misty Copeland was born in Kansas City, MO on September 10, 1982 and later moved to California. When Misty was seven years old, she watched the film Nadia (an AWESOME movie!) that chronicled the life of gymnast Nadia Comăneci. She fell in love with gymnastics (mainly the choreographed floor routines) as well as ballet. She soon joined a free ballet class at her local Boys and Girls Club. The instructor saw her talent at the after school classes and convinced Misty to join her classes at the San Pedro Dance Center.

As Misty trained, her instructor saw that she was a prodigy. Misty soon gained roles in major productions, earning solos and lead roles in local ballets. It wasn’t until last year, however, that Misty got her “big break”. She was signed as the first African American woman to be promoted to Principle Dancer for the American Ballet Theatre!

The honors keep coming for Misty, as this year Mattel announced that Misty would be immortalized as a Barbie doll in the company’s “Sheroes” line, featuring famous women who are leaders in their fields!

This weekend, I hosted my Best Mate’s baby shower. The theme? Doctor Who! When I found out she was having a boy, I automatically knew that would be the theme– I mean, hello–everything’s BLUE!

Knowing the theme, I ordered these silicone molds from Think Geek:

tardis mold

I thought I’d use them for little chocolates or maybe mini cupcakes. Yeeeahhh… I didn’t realize they were bigger than they looked. Must’ve been that timelord technology.

Anywhoo, I thought, “What can I make with these?” Then it hit me: soap!

I looked online or instructions and got to work! First, I gathered my gear:

~glycerin soap

~soap dye

~lavender essential oils

~Tardis molds

To begin, I sprayed the molds with alcohol to help the glycerin not to create bubbles.

Then, I melted the glycerin. I placed it in a microwave-safe bowl and heated it up for 30-second intervals, stirring between each interval, until the glycerin was melted thoroughly.

Next, I added the color and essential oils. I chose lavender because its relaxing and I like the smell.

After the soap was blue throughout, I poured the glycerin into the molds and sprayed it with alcohol again, to reduce the bubbles.

I let the soap set overnight and then popped them out in the morning:

This was such a simple and fun little craft! I ended up using the soaps as prizes for the game we played and people really liked them! I think I may go buy a circle mold and make some “fun soap” for my nieces and nephews!

A while back, I posted a list of things I thought were the greatest simple pleasures in life. Now that I’m a mom of two, my list has gotten REALLY simple. Here are a few things that give this momma absolute joy:

When BOTH kids take a nap at the same time (and ACTUALLY. SLEEP.)

The Kids Are Asleep

Watching your oldest dote on your youngest.

Going to the bathroom and there’s no one crying or trying to break down the door.

Sitting down.

Rocking your sleeping baby.

Watching an entire episode of something that isn’t animated. (Or features puppets)

The sound of the garage door opening signaling that Huff the Hubs is home.

Eating a hot meal.

Talking with other moms and realizing your kid isn’t a heathen. She’s just, well, a kid.

Hearing your toddler say, “I wanna hold you.”

Going out to eat as a family without experiencing a child meltdown.

What would you put on your list? Share in the comments below!

Try It Tuesday

Try It Tuesday New Product Banner

I love trying new products. And thanks to Try It Tuesday, I have an excuse to by all of these cool items I see at the store that I normally wouldn’t buy! Enter, these two new treats!

I looooove Pop Tarts and I have such an intimate lover affair with bacon that one of my nicknames is Bacon Face. So, yeah, when I saw these, I was SO. FREAKING. EXCITED.

I normally don’t heat up my Pop Tarts (I know; I’m weird) but this one was begging to be toasted. Y’all, it smelled AMAZING as it was heating up in the toaster. Fo’ reals. It was like bacon was sizzling on the griddle. I couldn’t wait to try it!

The smell, however, was the best part of this. I couldn’t really taste the “bacon” and the maple was really overpowering. Sigh.

I’m a big fan of Laughing Cow cheeses. They are so yummy! They have always been one of my favorite snacks. A Laughing Cow wedge + whole wheat crackers = A Happy Jessie. I was shopping at WalMart the other day and saw these:

It was like freaking Dunkaroos for adults! And let me tell ya, these did NOT disappoint! It was so tasty! My only complaint was that there was a lot of leftover cheese and not enough sticks to dunk (ironically, I always had the opposite problem with Dunkaroos, lol). Other than that, this was a yummy snack and only has 100 calories! Goldmine!

Have you tried either of these products? What new products have you tried that you like? Any you don’t care for? Share in the comments below!

Y’all, its been a mother of a day. After dropping Huff the Tot at my aunt’s house so I could take Huff the Babe to his 2-month well child checkup, I saw that my rear driver’s side tire was completely FLAT. Scrambling, i called Huff the Hubs, my mom, and my dad for help. Huff the Hubs had used up all of his sick leave and vacation time to stay home after I gave birth (don’t even get me started on the horrible maternity/paternity leave policies in this country) and my dad couldn’t leave work. My mom came to drive us to the doctor, but thankfully my father-in-law came and changed my tire, taking the flat to get fixed. After we made it to HtB’s appointment (15 minutes late) I was told that my little boy would be getting THREE shots. THREE. And they said, “Don’t worry if he’s fussier than normal.”

Uh, this kid is perpetually fussy.

Needless to say, its been a day. And I could use some laughter so I’m sharing a funny (and oh-so-relatable!) video with you, Momma. Just in case you need to get some giggles out because your threenager threw an all-out, on-the-floor-fit because you didn’t buy the fruit snacks shaped like Captain America or your colicky newborn kept you up all night.

Its finally here! Praise the Lord, its FINALLY Friday! I’ve been looking forward to this beautiful day all week! Let’s jump right in and get our nerd on!

On May 27th, the new Alice Through the Looking Glass hits theaters. Because he is awesome and amazing and basically the best, Johnny Depp decided to surprise Disneyland guests this week by appearing at the park! Guests walked by what they thought were digitized mirrors with a Depp recording. However, he was actually there, speaking with guests in real time! Check it out!

Ever since the Harry Potter tour of London started, I have been dying to get on a plane and trek it back to my favorite place on Earth (besides Oklahoma)! And now, I have yet another reason! Warner Brothers Studios in London has now opened up the Dursely’s home as part of its tour! They’ve got everything from pictures of pudgy Dudley to the flying letters for Harry! Watch and try not to be bewitched!

Sorry to end on a sad note, but many beloved television shows are going to that big DVD set in the sky. Womp, womp.

Agent CarterGalavantCastle (say it ain’t so, Captain Reynolds!), and The Muppets (NOOOO!) all got the axe. Any shows you’re surprised at seeing on this list? Any you’d like to see off the air? (Ahem, Keeping Up with the Kardashians)

Happy fangirling!

Try It Tuesday

Try It Tuesday Cooking Badge 2

Not only did I get an awesome gift for Mother’s Day (two gorgeous chaise loungers for the backyard so I can layout and get some sun on these vampire-white legs) but Huff the Hubs made me a DELICIOUS breakfast!

Earlier last week, I saw a segment from our local news station about a Mother’s Day breakfast of brownie waffles, so I asked HtH if he’d make it for me. He. Did. GOOD.

Here’s what you need:

~Brownie mix

~whipped cream

~strawberries, sliced

~vegetable oil (HtH used EVOO)

~chocolate syrup

Mix the brownie mix according to the instructions, adding an extra egg. Pour the mix into the waffle iron. While the waffle is cooking, prepare your bacon. Huff the Hubs put his in the oven so it would all cook at the same time and not spatter everywhere.

When everything is finished cooking, its time to assemble your masterpiece. (Huff the Hubs stacked mine like in the video, but he liked the picture of his waffle better, so I’ll describe that one). Cut your waffle into fourths (our waffle maker basically does this for us). Place your waffle pieces on your plate and cut four strips of bacon in half, making eight pieces. Dollop whipped cream on top of the waffle pieces and place two small pieces of bacon on each quarter of your waffle. Then, add strawberry slices and drizzle with chocolate syrup. When you’re done, devour your tasty masterpiece!

Y’all, this was AH-MAY-ZING! I think this is going to be my go-to Mother’s Day/birthday/special occasion breakfast from now on!

Since becoming a mom of two, I’ve had many epiphanies:

No matter what your child is doing, when they see you’re dealing with the other kid, they use that opportunity to destroy something or have a complete meltdown.

I can survive on 4 hours of sleep or less a night.

Going to Lowe’s by yourself to pick out plants is the motherhood equivalent of an all-inclusive vacation.

But the biggest epiphany I’ve had is that I do not have to be perfect.

As soon as I felt healed and ready to get back into my old routines after giving birth to Huff the Babe, I thought I need to be able to jump back into the life I had before having two kids. I needed to keep up with my workload, make sure I accomplished all of the things on my chore list, and keep the house organized and tidy. Then I realized I’m an idiot.

I soon realized I couldn’t keep the same momentum I had before. At least, not in these early days. These days are often referred to as The Fourth Trimester. The Fourth Trimester is all about survival.

I’ve learned to let go of crap that isn’t that big of a deal. Because right now, if by the end of the day my kids and I have been fed and are alive its been a good day.

Huff the Tot only ate one bite of egg and barely touched her yogurt?

She’s watched an hour of Little Einstein’s while I slept next to her?

Huff the Babe is still in the jammies he wore to bed last night and its 4:00 in the afternoon?

It’s all good.

Not long ago, these facts would have sent me into a spiral of guilt and anxiety. I would’ve questioned my ability to be a good mother and started searching Pinterest for ways to increase productivity while I slept. Now? I could care less. Why? Because I’m just trying to survive. When you get into survival mode, things like whether or not you’ve showered that day or whether or not your kid has had four servings of veggies doesn’t seem to matter.

I’m sure one of these days when I get more sleep and have more energy, we’ll get back to our old routine–or just come up with a whole new one. But for now, I’m going to stop being so hard on myself. My baby isn’t even two months old yet, for crying out loud. We’re still very new to this two kid thing and we’re all still getting to know one another.

And that’s my message to you, overworked Momma. If you’re feeling overwhelmed and like you can never do enough or you’re not good enough, know you are. And know that there are seasons in which survival is all you can strive for and that’s okay. If everyone’s fed, clothed, and knows they’re loved, you’ve done your job. Way to be, girl. Way to be.
