Her’s Day Thursday

hersday thursday4

Since yesterday was International Women’s Day, I thought it would be appropriate to highlight some of the awesome ways women have influenced the world! Here are some amazing women who invented some extraordinary things!

Stephanie Kwolek

kwolek

Kwolek, a chemist, discovered and invented the materials used to make Kevlar bulletproof vests!

Florence Parpart

florence

We ALL owe Florence Parpart a HUGE thank you! She’s the inventor of the refrigerator (aka, The Real Happiest Place on Earth)!

Josephine Cochrane

jospehine

Josephine Cochrane is an A+ in book. Why? She is the inventor of the dishwasher! Saving us all (and by all I mean ALL–not just ladies) from the horror that is washing dishes by hand!

Marie Van Brittan Brown

marie

Marie was a nurse who worked odd hours and frequently found herself at home alone during the night. She collaborated with her husband and invented the home security system!

Tabitha Babbitt

tabitha

Tabitha Babbitt lived in a Shaker community in Massachusetts which relied heavily on the forestry business. She observed that the men exerted a lot of energy but using the two-men pull saws. Because of this, she invented the circular saw!

Have you ever heard of any of these inventors? Know of any others? Share in the comments below!

Try It Tuesday

My Pinterest feed has been saturated with today’s Try It for so long that I thought it was time to finally see what all the fuss was with these things:

I won’t lie, I’m a little skeptical as to how these will work, no matter what some folks may say. But, I’m willing to try it out. I have a few kiddos I work with that I think will benefit from this (if it works) as well as Huff the Tot.

Here’s what I used:

~ 2 Smart Water water bottles

~ Glitter glue

~Glitter

~Sequins

~Hair gel

First, I took the label off of the bottles. Goo Gone really helped get all the sticky gunk off.

After that, I squirted some glitter glue and gel into one of the bottles. Then, I added different colored sequins:

Next, I added some warm water (every site I read was very specific–the water MUST be warm to break up the glitter glue and gel), food coloring, and shook it all up!

Pretty, huh?

I decided to make a few more and even made a smaller one based on this sensory bottle, complete with glow-in-the-dark stars.

I didn’t add as much gel to the golden bottle because the pink one seemed too “gel-y”, e.g., the sequins just kind of hovered instead of floating for a second and then falling. You want more of a “snow globe” feel to your bottle.

I still have my doubts as to whether or not these will help some of the kids in my class to calm down, but I’m willing to give it a go! I’ll also be sure to update the blog after I’ve tested them out!

Have you ever made these before? Have you tried them in your classroom or with your own kiddos? What were your results? Share in the comments below!

Mommy Monday

Before I had kids, I read A LOT. There was a time I could be found most days with a book in my hand. Then I started ghostwriting. And then I had kids. And my reading log went from about 40+ books a year to maybe four. I’m trying to remedy that, though, which is why one of my goals for 2017 is to read more. I want to read, not only for my own benefit, but I want my kids to see me reading–I want to raise little bookworms!

So any time Huff the Tot wants to read a book, I {most of the time} happily oblige. Here lately, her book of choice has been an old book of Huff the Hubs’:

This book is all about Louis Pasteur, the inventor of the rabies vaccine (and pasteurization of milk!). HtT likes to read this book about 2,000 times a day, so it was no surprise to me when she came to me and said, “Mommy, my horse died. Her has the rabies germs.”

Y’all, I can’t make this stuff up.

And even though it may sound a bit morbid that my kid is pretending her horse died of rabies, I still think its awesome that my three-year-old is remembering and comprehending the story, as well as building her vocabulary! Those are just a few of the phenomenal benefits your kiddo gets just by you reading to them!

Do you read to your kids? What are some of their favorite books? Share in the comments below!

Her’s Day Thursday

During the Oscars this past Sunday, GE debuted an awesome new commercial. Didn’t see it? No worries! I’ve got it right here:

I. LOVE. THIS.

(Also, the irony that this commercial was played during an awards show honoring celebrities was not lost on me)

I wish great women like Millie Dresselhaus were held to the same esteem as celebrities. And Millie deserves it! She was the first female professor at MIT (she taught physics and electrical engineering) and has won several awards including the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the National Medal of Science (among more than a dozen others)!

You can learn more about Millie here!
