Try It Tuesday

Try It Tuesday Cooking Badge 2

For the past two weeks, Huff the Hubs has been saying he wants to make apple cider. Any time we’d be at the store and we’d see the pre-packaged kind, he’d lament the fact that we still hadn’t made it. So, this weekend I thought we should give it a try.

I found a recipe for slow-cooker apple cider and got everything we needed. It seemed simple enough and I LURVE apple cider!

Here’s what we used:

Try It TUesday Apple Cider (1)

~10 apples (any kind; I chose Red Delicious because that’s what I always see on the packets of apple cider)

~Gallon of water

~2 cinnamon sticks

~Nutmeg (just a dash)

~Cloves (a dash of ground or a few whole; I used 4 whole cloves)

~Cheesecloth (for straining)

First, we washed and sliced the apples.

We tossed them in the crockpot and then sliced the orange into 8 slices, adding our spices and water:

After that, we turned the crockpot to “Low” and let it cook for 8 hours. Meanwhile, I woke up at 4:00 a.m., puking my guts up. Seriously, whoever gave me and Huff the Tot this tummy virus, I. AM. COMING. FOR. YOU.

Anyway…

Later, when we all got up, the cider smelled great (at least, to those of us that didn’t feel nauseous at every turn). How did it taste, you ask? Well… I asked Huff the Hubs who just sighed and said, “Welllllll…..”

Turns out it was super bitter and even adding copious amounts of brown sugar and regular sugar were not enough to save this cider. We followed the directions EXACTLY as they were in the original recipe, so we’re not sure what happened.

Sadly, I will have to file this under “Pinterest Fail”. Womp, womp.

Have you ever made homemade apple cider? How did you make it?

Try It Tuesday

Try It Cooking Badge 3

Today’s Try It Tuesday is brought to you by the letter “S”.

“S” is for: Sick…which I am.

Technically, I don’t have bronchitis. Though, I keep coughing, my throat is a little tender, and my head hurts every now and then. But other than that, I’m perfectly fine.

But, though I may not be as spritely as I was last week, I am still here to bring you a tasty treat from the {web}pages of Pinterest!

Today’s letter doesn’t just stand for “sick”, but also “smoothie”!

Since I’ve been feeling under the weather–and given the long line at CVS Pharmacy, I figured others were as well–I thought I would do a Try It that is packed with vitamins and good-for-you food!

Here’s what you need:

FullSizeRender (2)

~V8 Fusion 100% juice (whichever flavor you want; I chose Strawberry Banana because I’ve tried it before and knew I liked it and I chose light because I am still trying to lose a few lbs!)

~baby spinach

~frozen mixed fruit

(In the original pin, the Mommy Blogger uses a larger measurement than I did. This is simply because she made it for herself and her kiddo and her blender is MUCH bigger than mine.)

First, drop the spinach in the blender (I used a cup of spinach). Next, I poured in 3/4 cup juice, and 3/4 cup frozen fruit.

Then I blended it and got this lovely mud-colored concoction:

I transferred it in to my Snackeez (AKA, the greatest invention known to man) because, 1-like Iggy, I’m fancy; and 2-I was able to pour some almonds into the top part for my snacking convenience.

This was DELISH! I couldn’t taste the spinach (which, I used to drink spinach/banana/peanut butter smoothies ALL THE TIME, so I knew the spinach would not be taste-able) AND this entire recipe was only 110 calories! Perfect for a snack and you get a serving and a half of fruits and veggies! Perfect!

Even though its been chilly outside, I have been craving cold drinks: snowcones, Boba tea, and frappuccinos. But, Starbucks is super-crazy expensive (and fattening) so I searched the Pinterest-sphere and found a recipe for frappuccinos that won’t bust your wallet or your belt!

Here’s what you need:

~2 tbsp coffee instant granules

~2 tbsp coffee creamer

~1/2 cup milk

~8-10 ice cubes

~Splenda (or your favorite low-cal sweetener) to taste

All you need to do is blend everything together:

And serve:

It was pretty good! I don’t think I needed tablespoons of coffee granules, though. The coffee taste was like a roundhouse kick to the taste buds. Next time, I’ll probably use 1-1 1/2 tablespoons of coffee (and actually remember to add Splenda). I’d REALLY like to get some Peppermint Mocha creamer and add some crushed peppermint to the top! Mmm….

(Also, the entire recipe was only 75 calories! What a deal!)

Try It Tuesday

There’s been a nip in the air the past several days which means it’s finally time for mugs full of warm, cozy drinks to make our descent into fall and winter a little less chilly.

I know that its not Who-themed, BUT, this week everyone’s favorite fanboy director gave us a charge to donate to Force for a Change/UNICEF, as well as a sneak peek at one of the new X-Wing’s (even though the wings no longer make an X) from the set of Star Wars: Episode VII! Check it out!

Go donate, people! You could be helping make someone else’s life better AND possibly be able to visit the set! That’s every fangirl/fanboy’s DREAM!
