Try It Tuesday

I am so jazzed about today’s Try It!

It encompasses so many areas that I’ve been wanting to work on, that its like, the ULTIMATE Try It!

As you may remember, one of my New Year’s Resolutions was to try and find more ways to “go green”. I’ve also caught the upcycling bug ever since my highchair experiment. AND, as part of my August detox, I’m trying to find ways to cut needless spending. So today’s Try It Tuesday is a combination of those things!

I have a ton of nerd shirts that don’t really fit me anymore and I’m super bummed because I LURVE them. I’ve been looking for a project that will allow me to keep them, and as I searched Pinterest, I came across this and did a Kermit arm flail of excitement:

Its upcycled, reusable t-shirt bags!

They are SUPER easy to make too!

Here’s what you need:

~an old t-shirt

~sewing machine

~straight pins

First, grab your t-shirt and lay it out on your table, smoothing it flat. Then, cut the sleeves off. When you cut, be sure to leave the seam in tact (though cut as close as you can) because these will be your handles.

Next, grab a plate, flip it upside down, and place it at the top of the shirt (around the neckline). Slide the plate so that the top seam hits the middle of the plate. Trace the plate on your shirt. Then, cut along the line you just made (this is the opening of the bag).

Turn the t-shirt inside out and pin the bottom of the shirt.

Sew a simple line at the bottom of the shirt, closing up the hole.

Remove the pins and turn your new, upcycled bag right side out.

You guys, this project was super, super easy! I am not a seamstress by any means and I did it! It seriously would’ve taken me about 5 minutes if I didn’t have to keep stopping to take pics and chug Diet Coke®.

I’m all about donating used clothes to Goodwill or your church’s Care Center, but if you have some shirts that have sentimental value (and you don’t want to make a t-shirt quilt) I highly suggest this!

Earth Day

Happy Earth Day, green peeps!

One of my resolutions this year was to be more environmentally conscience. We already use cloth diapers, cloth napkins, and eco-friendly detergent but I wanted to do more. The goals have kind of fallen by the wayside because things have been hectic around here. But, today’s holiday has renewed my fervor!

There are a ton of things you can do to help reduce your carbon footprint. Here’s what I did:

Instead of using pointless energy to dry my clothes, I hung up all of my laundry outside (even my socks and unmentionables!)

I turned off all the lights in the house and opened up the shades and curtains to work by sunlight.

And even Hermione go in on the Earth Day action! Her babysitter (my aunt) lives only a few blocks away, so we commuted by stroller today!

Did you do anything to help the environment today? Got any good tips?
