Fan Girl Friday

It’s Friday, people! By this time next week we’ll all be waking up from our turkey comas and trying to scrape together bail money for that one aunt who punched a man for the last $1.99 DVD at the Black Friday sale. Ah, family.

But before you get frantic over family and food, take a deep breath, relax, and enjoy all the geeky goodness I have to share!

You guys. Are you sitting down? If not, do it now. Are you sitting? Good. Lego recently announced six new sets coming to stores next year and three of them are from two of our favorite fandoms!

Oh yes, you heard that right! The Big Bang Theory AND Doctor Who will be getting their own Lego sets! I am seriously geeking out over here! I have already posted these bad boys on my Christmas 2015 list on Amazon!

Speaking of toys, you know I have a deep love for the girls’ line called GoldieBlox. They encourage young girls to get excited about engineering, physics, and other areas of science. While I sometimes think that their marketing may ruffle a few feathers (shamimg girls for liking princesses is sort of like shaming girls for not liking them, amiright?) I do think that their heart is in the right place by wanting to help the fields of math and science be more than a boys club. Here is their new ad:

What do you think? And if it looks familiar, here’s why.

This has been a great week for movie trailers! Especially from Disney! Check out two, all-new trailers from the House of Mouse:

And speaking of movies, I saw The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 last night and It. Was. AH-MAY-ZING! Seriously. I think this is the BEST one so far! The acting was great, the effects were so superb I fought back tears multiple times, and the sets totally blew what I had pictured out of the water! Even though I’ve read the book three times, my heart pounded, I covered my eyes, and hoped upon hope that things would work out (even though I knew the ending). Plus, J.Law’s rendition of The Hanging Tree was ON. POINT.

Girl Power!

On Monday, I talked about GoldieBlox and their awesome Super Bowl commercial. I wasn’t sure exactly what GoldieBlox did, so I looked into it. They are a start-up company that makes engineering toys for girls! Since about 80% of today’s engineers are male, their founder, thought that needed to change. So, she created GoldieBlox!

So many girls (me included) are not drawn to calculus and formulas. Maybe that’s because as kids, girls are pushed toward dolls (like the Teen Talk Barbie with her “Math is hard!” statements) whereas boys are pushed toward Erector Sets and Tinker Toys. (Sidebar: I played with dolls and I had a Dr. Dreadful’s Food Lab)

This got me thinking: what other toys are out there to encourage a love of math and science in girls?

I was NOT disappointed.

Look at these AMAZING toys to get our girls excited about math and science!

First up from the brand Roominate, toys to help girls see the fun side of engineering:

There’s also a doll manufacturer across the pond, Lottie, that has an awesome line of dolls. They’re sort of like the American Girl dolls, but with a twist. Meet Lottie and her Busy Lizzie Robot:

There is a Science Fair at school and Lottie decides to research if it is possible to build a robot using only recycled materials. It is hard work, but fun and exciting too. Maybe if the robot is really good it can even help her to tidy her bedroom and do the household chores! It is lucky that Lottie’s bedroom is so messy as she discovers a heap of useful things she can reuse and recycle to build her ‘Busy Lizzie’ robot; even some old shoes. Will Lottie’s Science Fair project win a prize?

But the creme-de-la-creme is from an awesome site called A Mighty Girl. Their mission is to ” provide the world’s largest collection of books, toys and movies for smart, confident, and courageous girls.” So great, right?! You’ve GOT to check out their collection!

Super Bowl Commercials

Happy Monday!

How ya feeling? I’m currently suffering from a wing-ice-cream-cookie-chip-and-dip hangover. But it was totally worth it.

Did you enjoy the stomping game yesterday? To be honest, I didn’t really watch that much of the game. I had to stream it on the Nook because we don’t get Fox for some reason. I was okay with that, though. I was only watching for the commercials anyway! That’s the whole point of the Super Bowl, right?

Most of the commercials I saw were…okay. There were, however, some hidden gems that I absolutely loved!

Ah, Tebow.

He’s had a heck of a few years, hasn’t he? I thought this commercial was hilarious because it was very cheeky, subtle nod to his professional life. Two thumbs up!

The Goldie Blox commercial is, by far, one of my favorite commercials EVER. This commercial really resonates with me. As a kid, I loved playing with Legos, pretending I was a Ninja Turtle with my cousin, and watching Batman: The Animated Series. So I like it when toy companies are like, “Hey, girls can like this stuff too!” (Don’t get me wrong, I love me some Disney princess movies and pink, sparkly things. But its not ALL I like).

I don’t even know what this commercial is about. All I know is: Tom Hiddleston is in it. That’s all I need to know.

This commercial got me Right. In. The. Feels. You can’t go wrong with a puppy and a horse.

And you know I couldn’t talk about the SB commercials without highlighting my Muppets and the new trailer that debuted!
