Her’s Day Thursday

Even though the Olympics are over, I’m still seeing posts about Olympic athletes (both past and present) pop up in my Facebook newsfeed. The other day, I came across an amazing video about an Olympian and I had to share her story with you!

Today’s leading lady is: Agnes Keleti!

Agnes Keleti was born January 9, 1921 in Hungary to a Jewish family. Agnes started gymnastics when she was four years old and became the Hungarian National Champion in gymnastics at 16. Everyone believed Agnes would be represent Hungary in the 1940 Olympics, however the Nazi regime had other plans.

Because of the abhorrent treatment of the Jewish people, Agnes and her family were forced into hiding. Agnes made it through the war by purchasing Christian identification papers and working as a maid in a small Hungarian village. Her mother and sister also survived, however her father died in Auschwitz.

After the war was over, Agnes almost immediately went back to training. Sadly, an injury caused Agnes to have to sit out at the 1948 Olympics. However, she made a comeback in 1952—at the “ripe old gymnastics age” of 31—and won her first gold medal in Floor Exercises! Agnes went on to win ten Olympic medals as well as the All-Around Hungarian championships ten times! She is the most decorated female Jewish Olympian of all time! A political upset in Hungary caused Agnes to defect to Israel, where she went on to coach the Israeli gymnastics team for nearly two decades. Though she is retired, Agnes still works on her gymnastic skills every day!

With the 2016 Olympics kicking off in Rio tomorrow, I thought that this week’s Her’s Day Thursday leading ladies should be none other than #TeamUSA Olympians!

First up, Missy Franklin!

The 21-year-old Canadian-American swimmer may be young, but the girl has already achieved so much in her swimming career! She has won FOUR Olympic gold medals and has set FOUR world records! Not only that, but Missy credits her faith for her success:  “God is always there for me. I talk with Him before, during and after practice and competitions. I pray to Him for guidance. I thank Him for this talent He has given me, and promise to be a positive role model for young athletes in all sports.”

You are definitely a role model, Missy!

 

Another awesome athlete that is kicking butt and taking names: Claressa Shields!

Claressa is giving the one-two-punch to folks that think girls can’t dish out KO’s. Claressa was the first woman boxer to win a gold medal while competing at the 2012 London Olympics! Out of her 75 total fights, Claressa has only lost ONCE. ONCE! Get it, girl!

 

There was a time in my life that I thought I might try a triathlon. That was s short-lived dream. I’ll leave that to the pros like Gwen Jorgensen!

Gwen competed for Team USA at the 2012 London Olympics and is back again to bring home the gold from Rio! Gwen is a total BAMF, running a personal best of a mile in LESS than 5 minutes (my PB was 9 minutes!) and the 3,000 meters in less than 10 minutes! Not only that, but two years ago Gwen finished first in FOUR consecutive triathlons! Who run the world? GWEN!

 

Gymnastics has always been my absolute favorite Olympic sport to watch (with swimming coming in a close second) and I am super excited to watch this young lady take the beam!

The road to the Olympics hasn’t been an easy one for Simone Biles. Her mother struggled with alcohol and drug addiction for years and she and her siblings were put up for adoption when the courts realized Simone’s mother could not care for them. Thankfully, Simone’s grandparents stepped in and took Simone and the kids in. Not long after that, Simone’s grandfather recognized his granddaughter’s talent for the sport and the rest, as they say, is history. Now, Simone holds 14 medals–the most of any female gymnast in America’s World Championship history–and has her eyes set on the gold for this year’s Olympics! Stick that landing, Simone!

Try It Tuesday

try it fitness

 

Normally my Try Its are tasty treats or helpful tips for around the house. Which, are always a lot of fun (I mean, who doesn’t want to try a brownie baked with a chocolate chip cookie crust?!) but, I thought I’d think outside of the box this week!

Fitness is a big part of my life–I’m not trying to be “Mrs. Fitness 2015”, but I like to workout. I typically work out 4-5 times a week, switching up cardio and strength training.

I’m always looking for new routines to keep my regimen fun and fresh. Enter the following video.

This video is LEGIT. Its tough. Don’t believe me? Just watch (<– that’s a pun you’ll get in a second).

My sister and I (and Huff the Hubs) tried this. It was…interesting. There were a few moves I had done before in P90X and Jillian’s 30-Day Shred, but some of the moves were down right HARD!

We were all a little sore the next day, but it was a “good” kind of sore; like you knew it was working because you were sore.

My sister said her new fitness goal is try to do the entire workout without stopping. I think I’ll take that goal on, too!
