Her’s Day Thursday

Hers Day Thursday Girl

With Comic Con kicking off in San Diego yesterday, I thought it would be fun to talk about some of my favorite female characters from the various fandoms I love! And let me tell ya, not all women in geekdom are leather-clad eye candy.

Hermione Granger

Hermione Granger

This book-loving Muggle-born will forever be my favorite character from the Harry Potter universe. Hermione was always the one to tell Harry, Ron, and everyone else to rise above the foolishness that Draco and his cronies were always spouting. She used her brain (and brawn when necessary) and founded S.P.E.W. (The Society for the Promotion of Elvish Welfare). Hermione is a fierce female and I’m proud my kid is named after her!

Donna Noble

donna-noble-catherine-tate-2

Nobody–not even Donna herself–thought she was anything special. But, as it turns out, Donna was “the most important woman in the whole wide universe”. After just one trip with the Doctor, Donna was forever changed. She knew something was amiss with the Adipose company and took matters into her own hands, investigating and eventually teaming up with her favorite Gallifrean! Donna traveled the universe and kicked butt during all of her adventures and also fought for the rights of others!

Katniss Everdeen

Katniss

Aside from the whole “dangerously-close-to-TwilightI-level-love-traingle”, Katniss is a total BAMF. True, homegirl probably needed some therapy after all of the tragedies she’s endured in her young life, but its not like Panem had healthcare. Anyway, she worked hard to provide for her family after the death of her father, fought bravely in the Arena (TWICE), and basically rescued all of Panem from the hands of yet another dictator. The Mockingjay lives, y’all!

Kaylee Frye

Kaylee

Kaylee is not only a sweet, cheerful, down-home girl, but she can fix basically anything with an engine faster than you can say: “No power in the ‘verse can stop me.” Kaylee loves her shipmates on Serenity so genuinely and fiercely loyal to her captain and beloved ship.

Geek Gift-Giving Guide

Happy Friday, folks!

Typically I do a Fan Girl Friday on the last day of the week, but since Christmas is in a mere 12 days, I thought I’d do ya a solid and help you figure out what to get the geek on your list!

Typically, those involved in fandoms aren’t that difficult to buy for. Basically anything that remotely looks like a Tardis or the battlestar known as Gallactica will tickle any fan girl or boys fancy. But, if you’re unsure of what items go to which fandom, why, I’m here to assist!

For the Whovian on your list:

Celebrate! Celebrate! (In style!)

For when they watch "Blink" at night...

For the Tribute:

For the one with too much energy:

Work off some of that egg nog!

For the one who—how do I say this nicely—frequents Taco Bell?

Happy chilly Friday!

Winter is in full swing now here in Oklahoma. And, for the rest of the world, winter is coming. (Like that segue?)

And what better way to prep for winter (and another blood-bath-filled season on your favorite HBO series) than by making lots of yummy baked treats? And where will you store such treats? In a jar fit for a khaleesi.

Don't awaken the dragon.

The second film installment in the Hunger Games series opened last night. Show your solidarity with Katniss as she fights her way through the arena with this awesome bangle from Think Geek:

"A gold token so we can all match."

“A gold token so we can all match.”

As the chilly weather approaches, you don’t want Old Man Winter (AKA, The Ice King) slowing you down as you fight monsters, goblins, and vampires for riches! Bundle up like the great adventurer himself! Yellow pooch sidekick not included.

Tomorrow is the day we’ve all been waiting for, Whovians. Its the 50th Anniversary special: The Day of the Doctor. I. CANNOT. WAIT. I’ve already got a list of snacks I’m going to indulge in whilst sitting in front of the telly (and oh yes, it includes fish fingers and custard as well as jammy dodgers) and I think I’ve found just the thing to wear:

"Not bad for a man in his jim jams, eh?"

“Not bad for a man in his jim jams, eh?”

Welcome to the 75th Hunger Games!

Its the day we’ve waited for since this time last year, Tributes! Oh yes, its opening day for Catching Fire! *NERD SQUEEEE*!!!

If you haven’t seen the trailer for this, you’ve obviously been living under a rock. It looks AMAZING. I know when beloved books are made into a movie, they sometimes leave out important or fan-loved elements (don’t even get me started on the lack of S.P.E.W. in Harry Potter or the fact that they left out Madge Undersee in the first Hunger Games movie) so I’ve prepared myself for that. However, there are still so many scenes I cannot wait for (and hope they do right).

The Arena

When the arena was described in the book, I had a specific idea of what I thought it should look like. And, from what I could see from the trailer, it looks like what I envisioned:

Tick tock.

Tick tock.

Finnick

Does this one really need an explanation?

"Sugar cube?"

“Sugar cube?”

The Jabberjay Scene

When I read this part in the movie, I seriously got choked up and almost boo-hooed. You know the scene: Katniss is in the arena and thinks she hears her sister, Prim. When she gets to where she believes Prim’s voice is coming from, she only sees Jabberjays. And then craziness ensues.

I think Katniss could use a Xanax.

I think Katniss could use a Xanax.

Finnick carrying Mags

I loved Finnick and Mags’ relationship in the book. Because they were from the same District (and Mag’s sacrifice–spoiler! You find out in Book 3) they have a close bond. I’m looking forward to seeing that on the big screen.

Run, Finnick, run!

Run, Finnick, run!

Katniss and Peeta’s Relationship

Katniss kind of makes me mad in the second book. Mostly because she starts to remind me of Bella. BUT, I do like how Peeta and Katniss’s relationship really blossoms and turns into (what the audience knows) is true love (even though Katniss is too stubborn to see it). I just hope that the filmmakers (and actors) get it right!

Representin' District 12.

Representin’ District 12.

I’m sure that I’ll love the movie. I will admit, the first time I saw Hunger Games I wasn’t sure how I felt, but the more I watched it, the more I liked it. And…I’m also sure that there will be elements that were in the book left out of the movie. Which, will probably cause a big bout of nerd rage.

Preach.

Preach.

But, I guess that’s what we fangirls and boys know we’re getting into when our beloved books, comic books, or graphic novels hit Hollywood. What scenes are you most looking forward to?

Fan Girl Friday

Happy Friday, nerdlings!

We’ve made it through another week and its time to fangirl it up!

I’ve found some great things from my favorite sites, but I’ve also uncovered some AWESOME new places to get your geek on!

“When’s the costume parade?”

“There isn’t one.”

“This party is just going to suck.”

“You’re a choo choo train?”

“You’re a choo choo train?”

Don’t worry, friend, you’ll be able to win any and every costume contest this Halloween (if the judges are a bunch of nuon -lovin’ physicists) with Sheldon Cooper’s Doppler Effect costume!

My ten-year reunion was just a few weeks ago, and as much as I loved my high school experience, I can’t help but wish I went to another school. One with more magic and moving staircases. Plus, I’d be able to wear this great tee from ThinkGeek with pride!

Hogwarts, Hogwarts, hoggy, hoggy, warts, warts, teach us something please!

Hogwarts, Hogwarts, hoggy, hoggy, warts, warts, teach us something please!

Huff the Hubs and I went un-traditional when it came to Hermione’s nursery. And seeing as how we’re hoping to raise a genius, we’ll need to save our pennies to send her to college so she can support us in our old age. This bank, in my opinion, would be the best way to store our funds:

"I expect to be well paid. I'm in it for the money."

“I expect to be well paid. I’m in it for the money.”

Speaking of our spawn, whilst searching Pinterest, I found the CUTEST website for nerdbabies! Its called Geek-A-Bye-Baby and it is FULL of fandom for your family! Check out this custom-made Firefly bedding!

"I aim to misbehave."

“I aim to misbehave.”

There’s also stuff for Mommies and Daddies! I saw a TARDIS lovey… I think Hermione is going to get one for Christmas!

Before I bid adieu for the weekend, just in case you didn’t know…

Katniss is excited.

Fan Girl Thursday

Hey fan-peeps! I’ve got something different for tomorrow so get ready for a bunch of nerd-tastic goodies coming your way!

First up, check out this awesome photo shoot from The Wedding Chicks‘ website! The couple’s wedding was Hunger Games themed. Let’s just hope that the guests weren’t asked to fight to the death.

I think the bride even resembles Katniss a little bit!

Its summer people, so that means heat. Which means you’ll be partaking in ice cream, but you’ll still need to look swim-suit ready. How do you keep the pounds off and still enjoy some Ben and Jerry’s? No need to diet, just use this from Perpetual Kid!

Half the spoon means half the calories, right? Right?!

Half the spoon means half the calories, right? Right?!

And, if that doesn’t help with your weight loss goals, maybe try this from Oh Gizmo! Its a toilet seat that tells you how much you’ve lost after you’ve–ahem–dropped the kids off at the pool.

This blog started out to be so classy. Now its just gotten crappy. Heh. Word play!

And finally, check out this ADORABLE necklace from Think Geek! I think every fan-girl is going to be sporting one of these very soon; they’re too cute to go without!
