JK Rowling is not only an amazing writer, but she is incredibly loyal to her fans. She knows that, even thought Harry is grown with kids of his own, we’re still chomping at the bit for any kind of wizarding world news. This week on Pottermoe, JK announced more information about wizarding history in America and the magical ruling body–The Magical Congress of the United States of America–MACUSA, for short.

macusa_in-article-image

Here’s a little tidbit:

“America remained one of the most hostile environments for magical people, mainly because of Scourer descendants who had vanished permanently into the No-Maj community and who kept suspicion of magic alive. Unlike most Western countries, there was no cooperation between the No-Maj government and MACUSA….

It was in Washington that President Elizabeth McGilliguddy presided over the infamous ‘Country or Kind?’ debate of 1777. Thousands of witches and wizards from all over America descended upon MACUSA to attend this extraordinary meeting, for which the Great Meeting Chamber had to be magically enlarged. The issue for discussion was: did the magical community owe their highest allegiance to the country in which they had made their homes, or to the global underground wizarding community? Were they morally obliged to join American No-Majs in their fight for liberation from the British Muggles? Or was this, simply put, not their fight?

The arguments for and against intervention were protracted and the fight became vicious. Pro-interventionists argued that they might be able to save lives; anti-interventionists that wizards risked their own security by revealing themselves in battle. Messengers were sent to the Ministry of Magic in London to ask whether they intended to fight. A four-word message returned: ‘Sitting this one out.’ McGilliguddy’s famous response was even shorter: ‘Mind you do.’ While officially the American witches and wizards did not engage in battle, unofficially there were many instances of intervention to protect No-Maj neighbours and the wizarding community celebrated Independence Day along with the rest of American society – although not necessarily alongside them.

One of the most significant American magical laws was created in 1790, when MACUSA approved an edict to enforce total segregation of the wizarding and No-Maj communities. Rappaport’s Law, named after then-President Emily Rappaport, was created as a result of one of the worst breaches of the International Statute of Secrecy ever known, a breach in which the daughter of Rappaport’s Keeper of Treasure and Dragots and a Scourer descendant almost exposed the existence of magic worldwide. With the passing of Rappaport’s Law, intermarriage and even friendship between wizards and No-Majs became illegal in the United States.”

I don’t really wear too much makeup. And, to be honest, I don’t really spend a lot of money on my makeup (Hello, ELF!) But if this Reddit dream became a reality, I’d totes drop the Sickles for it!

The Reddit user, Spellsandstars, says that while these were just a fun little craft to throw together, that she’s starting to think about making them a reality! I may have to watch some of her makeup tutorials, though, because this momma barely knows how to apply eyeliner!

Happy Friday, y’all!

Today has been a CRAZY day! Huff the Hubs got his wisdom teeth pulled this morning and I’ve been taking care of him while also scouring the internet for awesomely nerdy nifties for YOU! (I’ve also been researching how much it will cost us to move because I saw a mouse in our kitchen this morning and I do NOT want to live here anymore!)

Remember how awesome it was when Johnny Depp was the Madhatter in Alice in Wonderland? And how we all wished we could see him reprise his role? Well pine no longer, lovelies! Our wishes have come true! The sequel to Alice in WonderlandAlice Through The Looking Glass, is set to hit theaters next May! AND, its awesome trailer (complete with Alan Rickman voice over) is out!

And speaking of deep-voiced Brits, have y’all seen the  latest trailer for Sherlock‘s Christmas special?! NO?! Well, here it is!

Sidebar: When I see Holmes and Watson dressed like that, all I can think of is The Great Mouse Detective, ha ha!

Sadly, I don’t have a trailer for this last find, BUT I do have pictures and insider info! The latest film from the wizarding world of JK Rowling, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, officially has a logo AND a plot!

Fan Girl Friday Fantastic Beasts Eddie

The film, starring Eddie Redmayne, will be full of the magical world we all know and love, but with some twists. According to Entertainment Weekly:

“Eccentric magizoologist Newt Scamander comes to New York (for a reason we won’t disclose) with his trusty weathered case. This case is one of those way-way-way-bigger-on-the-inside magical devices, and within are expansive habitats for a collection of rare and endangered magical creatures from Newt’s travels around globe. He discovers the American wizarding community is fearfully hiding from Muggles (who are called “No-Maj” in the States) and the threat of public exposure is an even graver concern than in the UK (remember the Salem witch trials?). Fantastic Beasts is the story of what happens when this uniquely skilled English wizard travels to wiz-phobic America and a variety of his creatures, some quite dangerous … get out of their case.”

SQEEEEE!!!!! I. CANNOT. WAIT.

Fan Girl Friday

Hey you guyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyys!

Its Friday, people and I cannot believe it! I guess since I took a few days off this week has seemed so incredibly short! I am seriously in disbelief that it’s Friday. But, I’m glad it is! Because that means I can share with you all the fantastically fan-worthy finds I’ve stumbled upon this week!

Did you hear the collective cry of: “Why, GOD?! WHY?!” this week? Every fangirl in the world lamented the fact that everyone’s favorite sexy sleuth is officially off the market. Yep, Benedict Cumberbatch is engaged to his long-time girlfriend, Sophie Hunter. So yes, technically he’s no longer a free man. But, we can still giddy and giggly watching him do some spot on impressions of other celebs:

Speaking of folks across the pond, we have less than TWO months until we return to our beautiful home in the English countryside—Downton Abbey. And, lucky for us, a new trailer has been released!

Oh yeah, I just. Got. CHILLS.

I so jazzed that it is FINALLY getting cold around! Its my favorite season! No, not winter, hoodie season! And what better way to stay warm and cozy than with this adorable hoodie from Think Geek:

Give warm hugs and stay cozy!

My love for Harry Potter runs crazy deep. I mean, my daughter’s name is Hermione for heaven’s sake! But, I may think about the franchise a bit differently had the designs for the creatures and places been a bit…well, darker. Never before seen concept art for the HP films was released this week and, to be honest, they are probably going to haunt my dreams tonight! Just look!

Fan Girl Friday

Happy Halloween, ghouls and boys! I’ve got some great goodies to make today even more magical! Today’s Fan Girl Friday is all about our favorite boy wizard, Harry Potter!

I think I need to plan another trip to London. There’s an amazing hotel–The Georgian Hotel–that has fully renovated Wizard Chambers! Yes, you read that right, wizard! That means you can actually sleep in a Potter-themed room!

Does room service offer Butterbeer?

Seriously, I think its worth the almost $300 a night fee! Click here to take the virtual tour! See if you can spot all of the Easter eggs that only true Potterheads will find!

Our beloved author, Queen JK Rowling (okay, she’s not a queen…but she’s literary royalty in my eyes!) has released another short story on her website Pottermore! This one is all about that sugary-sweet-yet-horribly-evil-spawn-of-a-Squib, Dolores Umbridge.

So. Many. Cats.

So. Many. Cats.

Not only does Rowling give us a backstory to Umbridge and her evil ways, but she also opens up at the true inspiration for the awful teacher turned Muggle-hater (turned Azkaban prisoner!).

Have you been watching The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon? If not, you should be! He’s absolutely hilarious and gets so many celebs to do AMAZING things! Like this jaw-dropping rap from The Boy Who Lived himself, Mr. Daniel Radcliffe! Watch!

I sincerely hope you have your costume finished for tonight. If not–and you need some inspiration–take a gander at these Harry Potter themed costumes!

Dare to Dream…?

Before I go into today’s post, I want to preface with a few things. First, let it be known that I’m really not trying to be a Debbie Downer. And second, I’m not fishing for compliments. This is genuinely me trying to work through my thoughts in blog form. Get it? Got it? Good.

Here lately I’ve been feeling pretty forlorn. I’ve had my YA novel completed for months now, and reaching out to literary agents to get some representation but to no avail. I’ve been getting rejection after rejection.

tumblr_md71i5EsN91rk1afjo1_500

And I know that, as a writer, you’ll get a thousands No’s and you only need one Yes. But dang! when am I going to get that Yes?! I have an email folder and a file folder full of rejection letters (that I will use to wallpaper my office in my mansion after I become a famous author so I stay grounded) and I’m getting a little sick of it.

I’m starting to doubt my abilities as a writer (even though my manuscripts have all been critically-acclaimed by ME) and I’m starting to wonder if I need to keep pursuing this dream. Maybe I’m not as good of a writer as I think I am.

you suck

But then I think: “No. You don’t suck. JK Rowling was rejected twelve times before she got an agent, and Judy Blume spent two years getting nothing but rejection letters. You can do this.”

People always ask me, “Why not self-publish like you did with The Speaker?” Self-publishing costs a pretty penny if you want to do it right. Books aren’t necessarily always in the stores, and plus, with the marketing you have to do (all on your own, I might add) it basically becomes your life. Can I really do that with a full-time job, a husband, and a kid?

I just don’t know what to do. I guess I’ll keep pursuing this crazy dream until I either find an agent or get tired of trying. I hate to think of me giving up, though. I hate giving up. I mean, I wanted to give up so bad during the marathon but I didn’t. I just don’t know if this particular marathon is worth running.

I guess I’ve got a lot to think about.

thinking

What about you? Do you have any goals you’re working to achieve? Do you want to give up? Are you? Why or why not?
