Fan Girl Friday!

Fan Girl Friday Background

Its finally here! Praise the Lord, its FINALLY Friday! I’ve been looking forward to this beautiful day all week! Let’s jump right in and get our nerd on!

On May 27th, the new Alice Through the Looking Glass hits theaters. Because he is awesome and amazing and basically the best, Johnny Depp decided to surprise Disneyland guests this week by appearing at the park! Guests walked by what they thought were digitized mirrors with a Depp recording. However, he was actually there, speaking with guests in real time! Check it out!

Ever since the Harry Potter tour of London started, I have been dying to get on a plane and trek it back to my favorite place on Earth (besides Oklahoma)! And now, I have yet another reason! Warner Brothers Studios in London has now opened up the Dursely’s home as part of its tour! They’ve got everything from pictures of pudgy Dudley to the flying letters for Harry! Watch and try not to be bewitched!

Sorry to end on a sad note, but many beloved television shows are going to that big DVD set in the sky. Womp, womp.

Agent CarterGalavantCastle (say it ain’t so, Captain Reynolds!), and The Muppets (NOOOO!) all got the axe. Any shows you’re surprised at seeing on this list? Any you’d like to see off the air? (Ahem, Keeping Up with the Kardashians)

Happy fangirling!

Fan Girl Friday!

Happy Friday, y’all!

Today has been a CRAZY day! Huff the Hubs got his wisdom teeth pulled this morning and I’ve been taking care of him while also scouring the internet for awesomely nerdy nifties for YOU! (I’ve also been researching how much it will cost us to move because I saw a mouse in our kitchen this morning and I do NOT want to live here anymore!)

Remember how awesome it was when Johnny Depp was the Madhatter in Alice in Wonderland? And how we all wished we could see him reprise his role? Well pine no longer, lovelies! Our wishes have come true! The sequel to Alice in WonderlandAlice Through The Looking Glass, is set to hit theaters next May! AND, its awesome trailer (complete with Alan Rickman voice over) is out!

And speaking of deep-voiced Brits, have y’all seen the  latest trailer for Sherlock‘s Christmas special?! NO?! Well, here it is!

Sidebar: When I see Holmes and Watson dressed like that, all I can think of is The Great Mouse Detective, ha ha!

Sadly, I don’t have a trailer for this last find, BUT I do have pictures and insider info! The latest film from the wizarding world of JK Rowling, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, officially has a logo AND a plot!

Fan Girl Friday Fantastic Beasts Eddie

The film, starring Eddie Redmayne, will be full of the magical world we all know and love, but with some twists. According to Entertainment Weekly:

“Eccentric magizoologist Newt Scamander comes to New York (for a reason we won’t disclose) with his trusty weathered case. This case is one of those way-way-way-bigger-on-the-inside magical devices, and within are expansive habitats for a collection of rare and endangered magical creatures from Newt’s travels around globe. He discovers the American wizarding community is fearfully hiding from Muggles (who are called “No-Maj” in the States) and the threat of public exposure is an even graver concern than in the UK (remember the Salem witch trials?). Fantastic Beasts is the story of what happens when this uniquely skilled English wizard travels to wiz-phobic America and a variety of his creatures, some quite dangerous … get out of their case.”

SQEEEEE!!!!! I. CANNOT. WAIT.

Got Fan Girl-worthy news or updates about a particular fandom? Let me know and I’ll feature it here!

Happy fangirling!

SDCC

It’s the end of July and we all know what that means. No, not back-to-school sales, San Diego Comic Con!

Every year near the 20th of July, the sunny seaside town of San Diego (founded by the Germans*, you know) is flooded with geeky hordes of DND lovers, cosplay fanatics, and larping lunatics. It’s a great time to be an American.

Four years ago, I was able to go to “The Con” (that’s what we “in the know” refer to it as) and I had an absolute BLAST! Hands down, one of the most fun weeks I’ve ever had.

I’ve been seeing countless tweets and status updates from folks at The Con. It made me misty-eyed for my Con experience back in ’09, so I’m going to take you down a trip on Memory Lane.

Before going to Comic Con, I wasn’t sure what to expect. All I knew was: David Tennant was going to be there and so was the cast of New Moon. That’s all I cared about. Seriously.

When we arrived and got our badges, that’s when everything started to “get real”. I thought, “Holy crap. This is like, a really big thing!” (<– That’s what she said.)

Badges? We don't need no stinkin' badges!

Badges? We don’t need no stinkin’ badges!

There were people in costumes EVERYWHERE. Some of them were odd (we always assumed that the weird costumes that we didn’t recognize HAD to be from anime. I was NOT a fan of anime back then) and some were downright awesome:

Quail Man!

Quail Man!

This was taken five minutes before I yelled at them for cutting. You may look like the Doctor, but that doesn't mean I won't turn on you.

I didn’t quite grasp just how many people came to Comic Con until we stood in line for the New Moon panel. The NM panel wasn’t on until much later in the afternoon, but we soon discovered that you have to sit through some stuff you may not want to in order to see who you want to see (i.e., the trailer and panel for The Final Destination: 3D. There are certain things you can’t unsee).

That day, the panel started off pretty nice; it was an hour-long Disney preview panel hosted by Patton Oswalt, also known as the voice of Remi from Ratatouille. He talked about some upcoming Disney movies and brought out Tim Burton. Tim Freaking Burton, y’all.

After discussing Alice In Wonderland, Mr. Burton said he had a surprise for us…His surprise? Johnny The Hottie Depp. When he walked out onto the stage, my sister started to sweat and I thought my bestie was going to go into labor (she was 5 months preggo at the time). It. Was. Amazing.

Oh, Johnny...

Oh, Johnny…

Sidebar: later on in the week, my sister and I were walking around the main floor and we saw someone in a squirrel costume. Here’s the conversation my sister and I had:

Bridget: Is that a squirrel?

Me: I think so.

Bridget: What’s that from?

Me: *disgusted voice* Ugh, probably some anime or something.

When we got home, we were watching E! News and were shocked to find out that the person in the squirrel costume was Johnny Depp! Moral of the story? If you see someone dressed in a costume that doesn’t seem to fit any genre of nerdom, take a picture with them. It could be a celebrity.

Anywhoo, back to my main point: the panels at CC are great! You never know what you might see. Like the cast of Chuck singing Queen’s Fat Bottom Girls:

Jeffster!

Jeffster!

Or David Tennant wearing a Stormtrooper shirt:

My hearts beat for Ten.

My hearts beat for Ten.

Or the chance to get a picture with Milo Ventamiglia:

"Jess" and Jessie!

“Jess” and Jessie!

Between the panels, the booths, and the costumes, Comic Con is one of those things that unless you’ve been, you can’t really grasp the nerdy magnificence. I wish I was going this year but evidently, you can’t fly when you’re 32 weeks pregnant. Sigh. Oh well, there’s always next year!

*Yes, I know San Diego wasn’t really founded by Germans. Clearly you’ve never seen Anchorman.

The Reel Deal

Ah, summertime. Time to toss our coats in the closet, strap on our flip flops, and sweat our gonads off in the heat. Thankfully, there is a welcome respite for the blazing temperatures outside: the cool, refreshing blast of the air conditioner of your local movie theater.

That’s right; its movie season again, folks! I generally see movies come in three seasons: Winter = family movies/movies with so many celebtrities that the poster looks like an Us Weekly cover and movies made from books; Spummer (a hybrid of spring and summer) = action movies and animated movies for all; and Fall: ridiculous sequels/retellings of horror films from the 1970’s.

This “spummer”, there have actually been a lot of movies I have wanted to see. But between tornados, vacations, and Braxton Hicks contractions, I just haven’t been able to see them all. However, there are some that I will NOT be waiting until they hit the Red Box to check out:

1. Monster’s University

I loved Monster’s Inc. And, in my opinion, Pixar movies never disappoint (I’m willing to look over Meet the Robinsons because of the awesomeness that was Toy Story 3). In the latest installment from the peeps with the jumping lamp, we are thrown back in time with our scary friends from Monstropolis: James P. “Sulley” Sullivan and Mike Wazowski. We get to see how these two (now) friends became best buds back in their college days. Not gonna lie; I may go see this without any children to accompany me.

2. The Lone Ranger

Lately it seems like the adage: “Everything old is new again” rings very true for Hollywood. We’ve had a remake of True Grit, Carrie, and Footloose all within the past 4 years. However, I am welcoming this remake with two very wide open arms. And it only has 60% to do with the fact that Johnny Depp is in it. I’m so excited to see what Gore Verbinski is going to do with this American classic!

3. World War Z

I’ve heard mixed reviews about Brad Pitt’s apocalyptic zombie tale. The critics say they expected more. Friends of mine said it was really good. Even my brother-in-law said that he really enjoyed it and it was a little difficult going home to an empty house at night after the movie. Since The Walking Dead hasn’t been on in months, I need something to quench my thirst for human-hungry zombies. Hopefully this will do just that!

4. Now You See Me

I know this one has been out for a while, but I still really want to check it out! I’ll admit, when I first saw the trailer I thought: ‘Huh, I guess magic is the new vampire’. (There were literally about three magician trailers when I saw the one for NYSM.) BUT, a bunch of friends have seen this and said that it was AMAZE-BALLS. I mean, how can it not be? It has The Hulk, Alfred, God, and Columbus!

Have you seen any of these? What did you think?
