Her’s Day Thursday

Hers Day Thursday Girl

With Comic Con kicking off in San Diego yesterday, I thought it would be fun to talk about some of my favorite female characters from the various fandoms I love! And let me tell ya, not all women in geekdom are leather-clad eye candy.

Hermione Granger

Hermione Granger

This book-loving Muggle-born will forever be my favorite character from the Harry Potter universe. Hermione was always the one to tell Harry, Ron, and everyone else to rise above the foolishness that Draco and his cronies were always spouting. She used her brain (and brawn when necessary) and founded S.P.E.W. (The Society for the Promotion of Elvish Welfare). Hermione is a fierce female and I’m proud my kid is named after her!

Donna Noble

Nobody–not even Donna herself–thought she was anything special. But, as it turns out, Donna was “the most important woman in the whole wide universe”. After just one trip with the Doctor, Donna was forever changed. She knew something was amiss with the Adipose company and took matters into her own hands, investigating and eventually teaming up with her favorite Gallifrean! Donna traveled the universe and kicked butt during all of her adventures and also fought for the rights of others!

Katniss Everdeen

Aside from the whole “dangerously-close-to-TwilightI-level-love-traingle”, Katniss is a total BAMF. True, homegirl probably needed some therapy after all of the tragedies she’s endured in her young life, but its not like Panem had healthcare. Anyway, she worked hard to provide for her family after the death of her father, fought bravely in the Arena (TWICE), and basically rescued all of Panem from the hands of yet another dictator. The Mockingjay lives, y’all!

Kaylee Frye

Kaylee is not only a sweet, cheerful, down-home girl, but she can fix basically anything with an engine faster than you can say: “No power in the ‘verse can stop me.” Kaylee loves her shipmates on Serenity so genuinely and fiercely loyal to her captain and beloved ship.

Fan Girl Friday!

Happy Friday, fangirls and fanboys! I’ve found the latest geeky goodies and compiled them all onto a list just for you!

Y’all, today is the today we’ve all been waiting for! Well, I’ve been waiting for anyway. Marvel’s Jessica Jones drops on Netflix!

Fan Girl Friday Jessica Jones

I’ve already watched the first episode and I like it! Jessica is a tough-talking, booze swilling, semi-hard boiled PI with a dark past. She’s not your typical Marvel heroine, but I like that she’s a bit gritty. I didn’t think I’d be able to accept Krysten Ritter as a tough chick, given that most of the roles I’ve seen her in she plays the earthy best friend or the vapid neighbor. But, I think she’ll do great with this! Plus, it doesn’t hurt that my favorite Doctor is in it as well! Though, he’s not as sweet as his Gallifreyan alter ego.

Looking for a fun gift for your Secret Santa? Check out these clever coins from Perpetual Kid!

Fan GIrl Friday Seed Money

They’re called “Seed Money”. What you do is you plant the paper coins and they grow into pretty flowers! Pennies bloom as delicate wildflowers, nickels become herbs, dimes turn into crunchy root crops, and quarters grow to become crispy fresh salad greens!

This week, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 hit theaters. And, from what I have heard from critics and friends, this is the BEST Hunger Games film yet! I am so excited to see it! I’m also excited about all of the merch that’s hitting the stores. Like this adorable Katniss from Vinyl Pop!

Fan GIrl Friday Katniss

You can get your very own Katniss at Hot Topic stores!

In just a little over a month, we will all be going to a galaxy far, far away! Its time to stock up on all of the Star Wars swag while you can! Like this darling droid lamp from Think Geek!

Fan Girl Friday BB8

This cute little lamp has three settings: on, off, and dim and will add Jedi charm to any room!

Happy chilly Friday!

Winter is in full swing now here in Oklahoma. And, for the rest of the world, winter is coming. (Like that segue?)

And what better way to prep for winter (and another blood-bath-filled season on your favorite HBO series) than by making lots of yummy baked treats? And where will you store such treats? In a jar fit for a khaleesi.

Don't awaken the dragon.

Don’t awaken the dragon.

The second film installment in the Hunger Games series opened last night. Show your solidarity with Katniss as she fights her way through the arena with this awesome bangle from Think Geek:

"A gold token so we can all match."

“A gold token so we can all match.”

As the chilly weather approaches, you don’t want Old Man Winter (AKA, The Ice King) slowing you down as you fight monsters, goblins, and vampires for riches! Bundle up like the great adventurer himself! Yellow pooch sidekick not included.

Tomorrow is the day we’ve all been waiting for, Whovians. Its the 50th Anniversary special: The Day of the Doctor. I. CANNOT. WAIT. I’ve already got a list of snacks I’m going to indulge in whilst sitting in front of the telly (and oh yes, it includes fish fingers and custard as well as jammy dodgers) and I think I’ve found just the thing to wear:

"Not bad for a man in his jim jams, eh?"

“Not bad for a man in his jim jams, eh?”

Welcome to the 75th Hunger Games!

Its the day we’ve waited for since this time last year, Tributes! Oh yes, its opening day for Catching Fire! *NERD SQUEEEE*!!!

If you haven’t seen the trailer for this, you’ve obviously been living under a rock. It looks AMAZING. I know when beloved books are made into a movie, they sometimes leave out important or fan-loved elements (don’t even get me started on the lack of S.P.E.W. in Harry Potter or the fact that they left out Madge Undersee in the first Hunger Games movie) so I’ve prepared myself for that. However, there are still so many scenes I cannot wait for (and hope they do right).

The Arena

When the arena was described in the book, I had a specific idea of what I thought it should look like. And, from what I could see from the trailer, it looks like what I envisioned:

Tick tock.

Tick tock.

Does this one really need an explanation?

"Sugar cube?"

“Sugar cube?”

The Jabberjay Scene

When I read this part in the movie, I seriously got choked up and almost boo-hooed. You know the scene: Katniss is in the arena and thinks she hears her sister, Prim. When she gets to where she believes Prim’s voice is coming from, she only sees Jabberjays. And then craziness ensues.

I think Katniss could use a Xanax.

I think Katniss could use a Xanax.

Finnick carrying Mags

I loved Finnick and Mags’ relationship in the book. Because they were from the same District (and Mag’s sacrifice–spoiler! You find out in Book 3) they have a close bond. I’m looking forward to seeing that on the big screen.

Run, Finnick, run!

Run, Finnick, run!

Katniss and Peeta’s Relationship

Katniss kind of makes me mad in the second book. Mostly because she starts to remind me of Bella. BUT, I do like how Peeta and Katniss’s relationship really blossoms and turns into (what the audience knows) is true love (even though Katniss is too stubborn to see it). I just hope that the filmmakers (and actors) get it right!

Representin' District 12.

Representin’ District 12.

I’m sure that I’ll love the movie. I will admit, the first time I saw Hunger Games I wasn’t sure how I felt, but the more I watched it, the more I liked it. And…I’m also sure that there will be elements that were in the book left out of the movie. Which, will probably cause a big bout of nerd rage.

But, I guess that’s what we fangirls and boys know we’re getting into when our beloved books, comic books, or graphic novels hit Hollywood. What scenes are you most looking forward to?
