One of my New Year’s Goals for 2017 was to try out new hobbies. I use the term “new” lightly because, as a mom, I don’t really have time for hobbies.

One of the hobbies I wanted to try out was woodworking. My dad is a master craftsman and has made some pretty incredible things:

So I knew he could show me the ropes. I’ve been wanting to build something that could show off mine and Huff the Hubs’ Lego minifigure collection. Right now they’re balancing haphazardly on the bookshelf–in prime range of a toddler who will not be named–and are constantly being found on the floor with several limbs missing. To save the Lego men and women from this disastrous fate, I called upon my dad to help a girl out!

I had a really great time learning what all of the tools’ names were, what they did, and how to use them. I also enjoyed when Dad cut most of the wood so I would not lose any fingers, haha!

After we planned, measured, measured again, cut, nailed, stapled, painted, and covered the display, it was finally finished!

(Yes, the shelves are level; its just the fabric. It got a little stretched, lol.)

And no, that is not the extent of our minifig collection, they’re just a few of my faves! I definitely think I will be doing some more projects with my dad–I really enjoyed this one! Now, if I can get it hung up without it falling off the wall, THAT will be an accomplishment!

Are you working on any projects? Have you made a goal to try out a new hobby this year? Share in the comments below!

Happy Friday, peeps! Being “iced in” has had its perks! I’ve been able to find some awesomely nerdy nifties and news to brighten your frigid Friday and make this ice-pocalypse just a little more bearable!

Eighties ladies, rejoice! I’ve found some some adorable shoes to fill your heart with nostalgia and your closet with glee!

care-bear-shoes

These cute, Care Bear ballet flats from ModCloth are 100% vegan (i.e., no animal parts whatsoever–all man-made materials!) and come in FIVE different colors!

Looking to redecorate your home in 2017 but have NO idea how to use a nail and hammer and also want to keep your nerd cred? Opt for EverBlocks!

everblock

These Lego-like blocks aren’t just fun, they’re functional too! According to their site, EverBlock was “…conceived to allow designers, decorators, and inventors everywhere to economically build their dream objects.” I think we need these in the Huffman Homestead!

Pokemon Go was HUGE in 2016 (it was the most downloaded app last year, according to Apple). And, with the major updates coming for 2017, I’m thinking its going to explode again! Get your gaming pals together and celebrate with this!

pikachu-cake

“I chews you, Pikachu!” will be the rally cry of all Poke trainers as you devour a delicious slice of this cake, fueling you for more battles in between Pokestops!

Anyone else over winter? Because I am. Express your exasperation with this sun-less season with this snarky necklace from Hot Topic10854471_hi

I’ll wear this thing ALL. YEAR. ROUND, yo.

Happy fangirling!

It’s Friday! *Flavor Flav voice* “YEAH, BOOOYYYYEEEE!” Today, we’re shaking things up on Fan Girl Friday–I actually don’t have fandom finds for you today! GASP! I know, I know… take a breath, it’s going to be okay. I DO, however, have some awesome tech that will make you FINALLY feel like all those predictions about life post-2000 in 80’s movies were accurate! To quote the modern-day poet, Bruno Mars: Don’t believe me? Just watch!

High five for making it through another week! Not only is it one of the best days of the week because now there’s no work for two days, BUT I’ve also found geeky goodies to make you say, “SQUEEEEEEE!”

Did you know that there are over 60,000 kids in the United States that are legally blind? These kids are missing out on some of the greatest things in childhood and this didn’t sit well with the fine folks over at the Dorina Nowill Foundation for the Blind and they decided to do something about it! They created some Lego-inspired building blocks with the Braille alphabet to help kids learn to read as well as have fun! Check out the video:

You can help get the word out with the hashtag: #BrailleBricksForAll

I may be the only person that truly loved Suicide Squad (by reading my Facebook newsfeed I’m thinking a lot of people will not be going to see the new Justice League flick). But one of the reasons I loved it so much was because of all the hidden gems throughout the film! If you didn’t notice ’em, don’t worry, The Nerdist has ya covered (Warning: spoilers!):

Potterheads everywhere lost our minds when Harry Potter and The Cursed Child came out a few weeks ago. Now, we have yet another reason to go crazy with happiness: JK Rowling has confirmed that three more books will be released! AHHHH!!!

harry-potter-ebooks

According to Time.com, these short story collections will “take readers deeper into the “dark side” of the Harry Potter wizarding world”. MERLIN’S. BEARD. It’s about to get real, y’all! Each book is about 10K words in length and will be available on Pottermore and other book-selling sites!

Happy fangirling!

Iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit’s Friday! And I tell you what, I’m am SUPER jazzed about all of today’s news! Seriously, its like the Geeky Gods decided to smile upon me this week with all of these squee-worthy finds!

No lie, I woke up to a text from my brother-in-law telling me that Lego just unveiled two of their new sets! Why did he share this news with me? Because one of the sets is a tribute to The Beatles! AHH!

lego beatles

I cannot wait to see what design Lego comes up with! I’m definitely getting this set (and keeping it far from Huff the Tot and Huff the Babe!). The second set Lego will be releasing is Apollo 11!

lego apollo 11

Though the design is not yet set in stone, Lego revealed on their blog that the set will be about 3 feet tall!

And speaking of The Fab Four, Hot Wheels is getting on the Magical Mystery Tour by releasing commemorative Beatles-inspired cars!

FGF Beatles HotWheelsThe Yellow Submarine 50th Anniversary cars hit Walmart stores nationwide on June 15th! Eeee!

And in other Lego news, the brick building company dropped a new trailer this week, debuting the new characters for their Lego Dimensions video game! Check it out:

Sah-weet! The new characters drop into stores June 14th! In the words of Jake and Finn, “Mathematical!”

This week on the Pottermore website, Ron Weasley, his sister Ginny, Neville Longbottom, and Luna Lovegood (also known as Rupert Grint, Bonnie Wright, Matthew Lewis, and Evanna Lynch) were all sorted into Hogwarts Houses!

I used to be upset that my House (according to Pottermore) was Hufflepuff, but knowing Ron and Neville will be there, I’m not so dismayed anymore!

Happy Friday, everyone! It’s our first FGF of the New Year! Woot, woot! I have scoured the interwebs and found some delightfully dorky treats to get your year started off right!

What’s the ONE thing that could make Legos better? I mean, besides making it pain-free to step on one. Why, having a custom-built Lego mini fig of course!

Fan Girl Friday Print Your Face on Legos

Now you can get a Lego figurine with YOUR face on it! Through a company on Etsy called Funky 3D Faces, you can have a custom, 3-D printed Lego head to attach to any Lego figurine you want! That means you could place your head on the new Doctor Who mini fig and walk around inside the TARDIS! A dream come true!

While I was walking around Target the other day, I saw a cookbook that I absolutely need!

Fan Girl Friday Nerdy Nummies

Rosanna Pansino—an internet chef!—has released her first book filled with geeky goodies to satisfy anyone’s sweet tooth! Recipes include: robot cake pops, geode candy cupcakes, and much more! The different chapters are: Math and Science, Space, Sci-Fi and Fantasy, Gaming, Tech and Web, and Geeky Treats!

One of my goals this year is to pick up a new hobby. I feel like everyone in my family has got a “thing”. My mom crochets, my sister bakes, my other sister sews, and my dad can build anything. Me? I can offer sarcastic comments and movie quotes. Something I think I’d really like is embroidery. Mostly because I saw this on Pinterest and I want to make them all! Luckily, Perpetual Kid has me covered!

Fan Girl Friday Embroidery Kit

How cute is this “paper” embroidery kit?! I think I’d do okay with this since it already has lines on it—ha!

Y’all, this next one hit me in the feels. Before we found out that Huff the Babe was a boy, we called him “Peanut”. I’m thinking I should ask Huff the Hubs for this as my “push present”:

Fan Girl Friday Peanut Necklace

Isn’t it adorable? This legume lovely is only $12.99 and would be an adorable accessory to any outfit!
