The Name Game: Part Three

Obviously you must have noticed I haven’t blogged in a loooooong time. Well, things have pretty busy around here. We found out that our newest addition is a boy! Also, my middle sister got married! Needless to say, its been chaotic at the Huffman Homestead. But now that things are starting to settle down and we’re {almost} back to “regularly scheduled programming”, we can now announce what we will be naming our newest little guy!

Its a Boy

Before I reveal it, a little backstory…

We knew this time around we wanted a name from The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Our girl name was easily decided upon: Eowyn. We love this name because we love the character and what a bad-a she is. Plus, we could shorten it and call Baby Girl, “Winnie”. But, the sonogram showed an “outie” and not an “innie”—ha!

So we started thinking about boy names we liked from LotR. Aragorn? Eomir? Baromir? Definitely not Frodo. But then we realized, “Hey! It doesn’t have to be someone’s name from the trilogy. It can be the name of a place.”

Our little guy’s name is:

Han Name reveal

Why Rohan?

The men of Rohan are strong—not just in battle—but in will and valor, full of integrity, and fight for their people against evil. Aragorn describes them this way:

They are proud and willful, but they are true-hearted, generous in thought and in deed; bold but not cruel…

—The Two Towers, Book Three, Chapter 2

Who wouldn’t want a son like that?! We decided we’d call him Han for short. A nod to one of our other favorite fandoms (and rebellious, scruffy, nerf-herder):

giphy (31)

Jude was easy. I’ve always been a huge fan of The Beatles. When my sister and I went to London after I graduated college, we made the trek down to Liverpool and spent the day on the “Magical Mystery Tour Bus”, seeing all the sites from the Fab Four’s childhood. I mean, I named my dog Pinny Lane for heaven’s sakes! Added bonus: whenever I call him for dinner I can sing, “Hey Juuuuude!”

So, there you have it! Our little Halfling has a name! And yes, I know it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea…but honestly, I don’t care. I mean, our daughter is Hermione and our son is Indiana. We couldn’t have a “Bill”. Not only that, but each of their names mean something to us. And that’s enough for me.

Fan Girl Friday!

Fan Girl Friday WallE

Hey y’all! Its been a hot minute since I’ve done a Fan Girl Friday and I thought your sweet little nerd hearts have been pining away for some geeky goodies so I’m back! These nerdy nifties are sure to get you back into my good graces so let’s dive in!

Personally, I’m an extrovert. I like being in a group (most of the time) and feel at ease with a lot of folks. However, I know not everyone is like me and I have a lot of peeps in my life that are perfectly content to just stay at home with a good book. Looks like I’ll be buying these socks from Perpetual Kid for them for Christmas!

My brother-in-law is a connoisseur of board games. Seriously. I don’t even know how many the man has but I’m fairly certain its in the triple digits. Anyway, he brought over a game and I loved it so much, I bought it! And now they have a Marvel edition!

marvel codenames

Here’s what Hot Topic says about game play: “The Marvel Edition of Codenames combines the hit social word game with the Marvel Universe including Spider Man, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Avengers and Doctor Strange. Two Cluemasters on opposing teams, S.H.I.E.L.D. and Hydra, give one-word clues to help their teammates be the first to identify all of their team’s field agents from the 25 cards displayed in a 5 x 5 grid.” Seriously, you guys. This game is SO MUCH fun!

And speaking of board games, I think I’ve finally found a game in which I will totally beat the pants off of everyone! Four words: HARRY. POTTER. TRIVIAL. PURSUIT.

According to Think Geek, the different categories are: Slytherin House, Death Eaters and The Dark Arts; Objects & Artifacts; Animals, Magical Creatures and Magical Beings; Witches, Wizards, Ghosts and Muggles; Hogwarts, Other Locations and Transportation; and Spells, Potions and Other Magic. The game also comes with four game pieces, each one representing the different Houses of Hogwarts! *cue fangirl scream*

Y’all, I’m not going to lie, I totally squealed when I saw this t-shirt! I have been wanting a shirt like this ever since The Fellowship of the Ring came out!

This Hot Topic online exclusive tee features the Doors of Durin and the phrase, “Speak friends, and enter” (just like mine and Huff the Hubs’ welcome mat!). *immediately orders shirt*

Happy fangirling!

Hallelujah, its Friday! Can I get an amen?! I know some folks woke up feeling very distraught because it looks like the UK and the EU are never, ever, ever, getting back together! But don’t fret! I’ve got some nerdy nifties to turn that frown upside down!

It seems like food trucks are everywhere these days! And its not just humans getting in on the street-vending delicacies! Your feathered friends can partake now, thanks to Perpetual Kid!

Y’all, adulting is hard. Between going to work, remembering to pay the bills–and more importantly, to put on pants–life can get a little overwhelming. Keep you and your pals motivated with these:

This Big Book of Awards For Grownups includes citations for being awesome or geeking out about various fandoms! <–Perhaps deserve that one?

Parenting is stressful. One thing that has made it easier (besides locking myself in the bathroom and watching Netflix on the iPad) is the sweet nostalgia of coloring. I’ll admit, I’ve sometimes stolen Huff the Tot’s coloring books for my own, but now I’ve got my sights set on another:

fgf 6-24-26lotr

One coloring book to rule them all! This book includes pictures from the animated movie, Peter Jackson’s trilogy, and artist’s renderings! Eee!

My niece and nephews have a TON of Nerf guns. I’mSO not joking. They probably have two large storage tubs full of ’em. My brother-in-law is a wee bit obsessed. But I’m thinking this NASA engineer has him beat! Check it out:

I don’t know about your dog, but at our house, Pinny Lane has her own couch. Sure, other people are welcome to sit on it, but is covered in her fur and if you so much as think about popping a squat, you’d better be ready to scratch behind some ears and pat a belly for hours! I’m thinking the little pinscher needs this:

Let everyone know that, like Sheldon, your dog’s spot is taken!

Guys. Get excited. I have more Batman vs. Superman movie news! The official title has FINALLY been released! The title of the movie is {drumroll please}: Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.

AND there’s a shot of Ben Affleck as the new Batman!

Did you know that Geek Pride Day was originally supposed to pay homage to the release of Star Wars but shares the date with two other fandom holidays—Towel Day (for Hitchhiker fans) and The Glorious 25th of May (for Discworld fans)? Because there was so much geekdom in one day, it morphed into GPD!And to celebrate the origins, JJ Abrams created a contest that could possibly get YOU on the set of the new Star Wars flick while also helping out UNICEF! Seriously!

You’d be doing good and increasing your chances of meeting Han Solo! If chosen, you would shoot a scene for the movie, be Abrams’ VIP guest on the set in London, and even bring a pal with you! Click the link for more!

Fan Girl Friday

Happy Friday (and happy New Year!) everyone!

I hope you’re ready for some awesomely nerdy finds! I can’t believe I haven’t done a Fan Girl Friday since LAST YEAR! (Cheap pun, but it had to be done.)

Have you seen The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug yet? I saw it a few weeks ago. It was…pretty good. Not as good as the first one, but still a must-see! If you go soon, you can keep comfy cozy in the cold weather with this awesome There and Back Again scarf:

One scarf to warm them all.

Huff the Hubs and I have been looking for a new bedspread. I wonder if I could convince him to indulge in this one? All I would need is a giant pencil-pillow!

All my best ideas come at night, now I can write them down!

The Doctor Who Christmas special aired a week and a half ago, but I didn’t get to watch it until this week. Not going to lie, it was a little hard to follow. And Capaldi’s regeneration? A little too quick for my taste. BUT, I’ll keep watching. And Maybe even nuzzle up with one of these plush pillows from BohoBear:

Sleep with visions of Time Lords dancing in your head.

Sleep with visions of Time Lords dancing in your head.

Did anyone get video games for Christmas? I didn’t buy any for HtH this year because he still has some from TWO years ago that still have the plastic on them. Seriously. I’m afraid he’ll be a hoarder if I continue to buy him video games. Kind of like this guy. He’s got the largest collection of video games: 10,607 games and over different 100 consoles!

Fan Girl Friday

I have so much awesome to help you kick off the weekend its ridiculous.

With the Oscars this weekend, I thought we could all get in the spirit with a movie-related post. True, not all of the films I’m about to talk about have been Oscar-nominated (though some have taken home quiet a few Razzies) but they’re still blowin’ up the interwebs this week!

What do you get when you cross a singing, French prostitute and a mutant Hobbit with an affinity for duplicity?

This video:

I won’t lie. At first I thought: Heh, this is pretty funny. Then I thought: This is just wrong. If I was conflicted, now you have to be. Sorry, that’s the way this relationship is going to work, peeps.

If that wasn’t odd enough, brace yourselves.

Remember back in 2006 when we heard that a Transformers movie was going to come out that next summer? Remember how happy we were? We reflected back to the days of our youth when we’d watch the antics of the Autobots on Saturday mornings? Then remember in 2007 when we all wanted to pelt Michael Bay with stale popcorn and lament the fact that he ruined such a great series from our childhood? Yeah. I do too. Well get ready. We may have to do it again.

"Now you know what happens when you insult a director: you have to do a movie with Sascha Baron Cohen."

“Now you know what happens when you insult a director: you have to do a movie with Sascha Baron Cohen.”

Evidently, he and Megan Fox have made up from their “little disagreement” and he is now considering her to play April O’Neil in his Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle movie! Ugh! *Throws Lego® Rafael across the room and screams like Shredder*

We could all use a heart-warming story right about now. Thankfully, I’ve got one.

While perusing Pinterest (and trying to block my vision of the stack dishes in the sink) I came across this:

I immediately thought: “OMG! This is why JK Rowling is awesome and Harry Potter kicks some serious hippogriff hiney!”

But then I thought: “Wait. This is the internet. Is this true?”

After some research, I found out it IS true!

The actress who plays Luna Lovegood, Evanna Lynch, did an interview with the British mag, The Sun, back in 2010. She credited Rowling with helping her get better and says that Luna was an inspiration to her. Behold, the power of reading.

And finally, Tributes, here’s something else to make you squeal with glee!

the-hunger-games-catching-fire victory tour

Check out the latest promotional poster for Catching Fire! Isn’t it awesome?! I cannot wait for this movie to come out! Granted, I’ll have my own little tribute by that time, but Momma’s still gonna go to the midnight showing. Because, well, let’s face it; I’ll probably be up anyway.
