The Name Game: Part Three

Obviously you must have noticed I haven’t blogged in a loooooong time. Well, things have pretty busy around here. We found out that our newest addition is a boy! Also, my middle sister got married! Needless to say, its been chaotic at the Huffman Homestead. But now that things are starting to settle down and we’re {almost} back to “regularly scheduled programming”, we can now announce what we will be naming our newest little guy!

Its a Boy

Before I reveal it, a little backstory…

We knew this time around we wanted a name from The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Our girl name was easily decided upon: Eowyn. We love this name because we love the character and what a bad-a she is. Plus, we could shorten it and call Baby Girl, “Winnie”. But, the sonogram showed an “outie” and not an “innie”—ha!

So we started thinking about boy names we liked from LotR. Aragorn? Eomir? Baromir? Definitely not Frodo. But then we realized, “Hey! It doesn’t have to be someone’s name from the trilogy. It can be the name of a place.”

Our little guy’s name is:

Why Rohan?

The men of Rohan are strong—not just in battle—but in will and valor, full of integrity, and fight for their people against evil. Aragorn describes them this way:

They are proud and willful, but they are true-hearted, generous in thought and in deed; bold but not cruel…

—The Two Towers, Book Three, Chapter 2

Who wouldn’t want a son like that?! We decided we’d call him Han for short. A nod to one of our other favorite fandoms (and rebellious, scruffy, nerf-herder):

Jude was easy. I’ve always been a huge fan of The Beatles. When my sister and I went to London after I graduated college, we made the trek down to Liverpool and spent the day on the “Magical Mystery Tour Bus”, seeing all the sites from the Fab Four’s childhood. I mean, I named my dog Pinny Lane for heaven’s sakes! Added bonus: whenever I call him for dinner I can sing, “Hey Juuuuude!”

So, there you have it! Our little Halfling has a name! And yes, I know it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea…but honestly, I don’t care. I mean, our daughter is Hermione and our son is Indiana. We couldn’t have a “Bill”. Not only that, but each of their names mean something to us. And that’s enough for me.
