Fan Girl Friday!

Happy Friday, nerlings! I hope you’ve been enjoying your summer and applying plenty of SPF 10000 because that’s what you need in the Oklahoma heat! I’ve rounded up some geeky goodies, so gird your loins! It’s about to get a whole lot nerdier up in this piece!

Watching Stranger Things season two made me all nostalgic for a cute little cuddly friend like Dart. Oh, wait… he wasn’t so cuddly, huh? Hmmm… well, Think Geek has made that alien aberration a whole lot snugglier, thank goodness!

These cute little guys are actually nesting dolls! They go from pollywog to slug to demodog! Aren’t they precious?

Did you forget Dad last week for Father’s Day? Don’t sweat it! Tell him his gift “got lost in the mail” and quickly order him this awesome Batman-inspired grilling set!

There’s also a Captain America set and a Wonder Woman set! Because, us ladies like a nice steak, too!

As a kid, I had an irrational fear that there were sharks lurking under the grates in the community pool (thanks a lot, Kid-From-When-I-Was-In-The-Second-Grade for telling me that!). However, this is a shark I could totally swim with:

This shark is not one to fear but to float! Its big enough for me to laze around in the pool while also blocking the sun so I can chillax without getting red! Woo!

Now that summer is in full swing, moms everywhere are starting to lose their minds because their kids just have SO. MUCH. FRICKIN’. ENERGY. Seriously, do they EVER stop?! Thankfully, Perpetual Kid has a way to keep them entertained for hours while getting them to use up all that energy!

innflatable_outdoor_rolling_wheel__30738.1527778470.jpgThe great thing about this inflatable roller is that your kiddos can use it in the backyard or in the pool! Think of it as a hamster wheel for your youngins!

Summer days are made for being in the pool. Honestly, I don’t know why people even leave the pool during June, July, and August (especially in Oklahoma)! Why get out of the cool, refreshing place to grab a drink when you can snag this awesome swag from Perpetual Kid?

At over five feet wide, this floating tiki bar has spaces for seven cold beverages (adult or otherwise) as well as a built-in ice chest! ALOHA!

One of the best things about this (besides its super comfortable and modest design) is that the binary coding on it spells “Love”! D’awww…

Maybe you don’t want to go out and instead, you want to have a weekend in! Your pals will definitely thank you for being a friend when you invite them over to play Golden Girls Clue!

Golden Girls Clue

According to ToyWiz.com, this specialty version of Clue “features a custom illustrated game board, where players attempt to solve the crime of WHO ate the last piece cheesecake, WHAT they left at the scene of the crime, and WHICH room they did it in.” When in doubt, blame Blanche!

Or, maybe, you’d rather use this extra-long weekend to just get away from people and spend some time with your fur babies. Why not spoil them with some nerdy cardboard houses from CacaoPets!

Her’s Day Thursday

hersday thursday2

With the 2016 Olympics kicking off in Rio tomorrow, I thought that this week’s Her’s Day Thursday leading ladies should be none other than #TeamUSA Olympians!

First up, Missy Franklin!

missy-franklin-usa1

The 21-year-old Canadian-American swimmer may be young, but the girl has already achieved so much in her swimming career! She has won FOUR Olympic gold medals and has set FOUR world records! Not only that, but Missy credits her faith for her success:  “God is always there for me. I talk with Him before, during and after practice and competitions. I pray to Him for guidance. I thank Him for this talent He has given me, and promise to be a positive role model for young athletes in all sports.”

You are definitely a role model, Missy!

Another awesome athlete that is kicking butt and taking names: Claressa Shields!

USOC Portraits for Rio2016

Claressa is giving the one-two-punch to folks that think girls can’t dish out KO’s. Claressa was the first woman boxer to win a gold medal while competing at the 2012 London Olympics! Out of her 75 total fights, Claressa has only lost ONCE. ONCE! Get it, girl!

There was a time in my life that I thought I might try a triathlon. That was s short-lived dream. I’ll leave that to the pros like Gwen Jorgensen!

Gwen Jorgensen

Gwen competed for Team USA at the 2012 London Olympics and is back again to bring home the gold from Rio! Gwen is a total BAMF, running a personal best of a mile in LESS than 5 minutes (my PB was 9 minutes!) and the 3,000 meters in less than 10 minutes! Not only that, but two years ago Gwen finished first in FOUR consecutive triathlons! Who run the world? GWEN!

Gymnastics has always been my absolute favorite Olympic sport to watch (with swimming coming in a close second) and I am super excited to watch this young lady take the beam!

Simone Biles of the U.S competes on the beam during the women's all-round final at the World Gymnastics Championships in Glasgow

The road to the Olympics hasn’t been an easy one for Simone Biles. Her mother struggled with alcohol and drug addiction for years and she and her siblings were put up for adoption when the courts realized Simone’s mother could not care for them. Thankfully, Simone’s grandparents stepped in and took Simone and the kids in. Not long after that, Simone’s grandfather recognized his granddaughter’s talent for the sport and the rest, as they say, is history. Now, Simone holds 14 medals–the most of any female gymnast in America’s World Championship history–and has her eyes set on the gold for this year’s Olympics! Stick that landing, Simone!

Happy Hump Day, writers!

Here’s today’s prompt:

What was an irrational fear you had as a child?

When I was a kid, one of my besties, Lisa, had a YMCA pass. She spent days with her grandma because her mother worked, so her grandma would take us to swim at the pool. I had never been to an indoor pool before this (most of the time I swam in my backyard or at the neighborhood outdoor pool) and was actually a little nervous.

After splashing around for a bit, a boy (a few years older than us) swam over to where Lisa and I were pretending to be mermaids (because, Ariel). “See that over there?” he asked, pointing to a grate at the bottom of the pool that I hadn’t noticed until then. “That’s where they let the sharks in when kids aren’t swimming.”

My heart dropped. Holy freaking crap, where did Lisa bring me?! I was going to get eaten by a shark and I’d never get to see what became of my beloved JTT on this season’s Home Improvement!

I immediately swam to the shallow end–far away from the death trap–and refused to move. What if the grate opened up and started chewing children left and right?! What if this was all a ruse and we weren’t really here to enjoy ourselves, but helpless pawns in the YMCA’s plan to feed their sea devils?

It wasn’t until I was in fifth or sixth grade that I started to realize sharks don’t live in public pools. Seriously. I blame that brat kid that fed me that terrifying lie for my aversion to sea animals. Makes me feel better about peeing in the pool he swam in. I hope he got a mouthful of my reconstituted Hawaiian Punch. Jerk.

What about you? What was an irrational fear you had as a kid?

Everybody in the Pool!

This week–since its been so hot–I’ve been frequenting my sister’s pool. The other day we were talking about how we used to have a pool growing up and how we never wanted to get out. We would spend HOURS in that pool. Which, I find funny because we didn’t really have a lot of pool toys. We just swam around, pretending to be Ariel or did flips off the deck. Nowadays, it seems like you HAVE to have pool toys; kids can’t be entertained for hours without some sort of object to float on or throw.

So I searched for pool toys online to see what was out there. And OMG, things sure have changed since 1989!

Check out this inflatable see-saw from Target:

Launch your friends into your neighbor's pool!

Launch your friends into your neighbor’s pool!

That really puts our inflatable alligator to shame.

This next item from Pool Products 4 Less just seems like a disaster waiting to happen. Plus, it seems like it would take up the entire pool!

Its basically a life-size Whack-a-Mole for the pool.

This item is for the adults! Don’t want to get out of the pool for a drink or to partake in a friendly game of beer pong? There’s no need to fear; Perpetual Kid is here! Just make sure the water is warm enough, a solar heater is a great alternative.

You can drink in the pool, just don't pee in it.

Maybe you’re not much of a swimmer, but you’d like to enjoy the pool whilst feeling like you’re getting a little culture. Enter Swim Outlet’s singing gondolier.

Itza me! Mario!

This suave gondolier sings three authentic Italian songs, glides around on the water, and lights up in the evening for some subtle romantic lighting.
