Mommy Monday New Banner 2

Does anyone else feel like they are just suffocated by all of their junk or is it just me? I feel as though our house is chock full of crap WE DO NOT NEED. Especially the kids. There are days I just want to go through the entire house and bag up everything and just get rid of it all. But I don’t. Because that takes A LOT of effort and I barely have time to go to the bathroom by myself. Plus, I’m not ready for all the emotional meltdowns that would follow.

But seriously. SO. MUCH. STUFF.

(That’s not my house. It just feels like it.)

I figured one way I could make our home less burdensome is by attacking the areas that have the most accumulation: the kids’ rooms. Some days I got to Huff the Tot’s room and find toys and think, “I don’t even remember the last time I saw her play with that” or “Has she even looked at that book?” Huff the Tot has so many books that they are scattered everywhere. There are toys in the hall, toys in the kitchen, toys in the bathroom. TOYS EVERYWHERE.

I was searching for some help and ideas on Pinterest when I came across the concept of toy rotation. The gist is this: gather all the toys, separate them in to different categories of toys, organize. I’d like to try it, it just seems a tad overwhelming. I’m also wondering if it would be worth it. So I’m looking to you, reader. Have you done toy rotations? What did you think? Is it easy to keep up with? Got any tips? Basically what I’m saying is…

Hey y’all!

Its been a while since I’ve done a refurbishment. The last DIY project I did was the highchair refab about a year ago. The other day, Huff the Hubs spotted this awesome find on the side of the road and picked it up for Huff the Tot!

Try It Playset Refab

I’m super excited about repainting it and adding some of my own touch to it. I haven’t gone shopping for supplies yet (I’ve been in Dallas over the weekend so my shopping time has been limited) but I’ve been consulting Pinterest to get some ideas!

Have any of you ever tried a plastic playset refab? I need all the tips and tricks you can offer! I’ll be sure to post pics of my “After” when I’m finished with it!

The other night after Huff the Hubs gave Huff the Babe a bath, he called me into the bathroom. “Look!” he said, disgusted, pointing to the bathtub. There were little black blobs floating in the water.

“What is that?!” I asked.

“I think its mold,” HtH replied.

I really hated to throw these away because HtB LURVES them SO much. Completely grossed out, I went to Pinterest to look for a way to clean up my kid’s bath toys. Evidently, this is not an uncommon thing. Thankfully, I found a pin that had some helpful tips:

Here’s what you need:

~A large bowl (or sink)

~Vinegar

~Bleach

First, I looked for the toys that had the little holes that water could enter into. As you can see, the holes were black, indicating mold:

I filled my bathroom sink up with hot water and about 1/2 cup of vinegar (I cleaned the sink beforehand; very important) and dropped in the toys. I made sure to squeeze vinegar water into the toys and swish the mixture around to break up the mold:

I let the toys soak for about 2 hours and then rinsed them out. By the time I was finished with the toys, the water looked like this:

Disgusting, right?

What was more disgusting was the fact that I could still SEE mold in the toys. I decided to pull no punches and grabbed the bleach. I soaked the toys again, in the kitchen sink, using a hot water and Clorox concoction. I soaked the toys for another hour and then rinsed them. Here’s what Hermione’s favorite unicorn puked up:

So. Flipping. Gross.

BUT, I am happy to report that Eunice the Unicorn had a shimmering white mouth AND we couldn’t see any buildup of mold through her belly–yay! The story was not the same, however, for one of the cupcakes. We could literally see the mold through the plastic. Huff the Hubs decided we should just call it and toss the tiny cake. I agreed, but asked that he cut it open first:

Try not to vomit.

After I rinsed and dried the other toys, I got the hot glue gun and closed up any of the squirter holes in the toys. Hopefully this will help keep the mold at bay. And, if all else fails, we’ll just toss the toys. Although that will make bath time a very dull affair.

Have you ever cleaned your kids’ bath toys? What did you do?

Fan Girl Friday

It’s Friday, people! By this time next week we’ll all be waking up from our turkey comas and trying to scrape together bail money for that one aunt who punched a man for the last $1.99 DVD at the Black Friday sale. Ah, family.

But before you get frantic over family and food, take a deep breath, relax, and enjoy all the geeky goodness I have to share!

You guys. Are you sitting down? If not, do it now. Are you sitting? Good. Lego recently announced six new sets coming to stores next year and three of them are from two of our favorite fandoms!

Oh yes, you heard that right! The Big Bang Theory AND Doctor Who will be getting their own Lego sets! I am seriously geeking out over here! I have already posted these bad boys on my Christmas 2015 list on Amazon!

Speaking of toys, you know I have a deep love for the girls’ line called GoldieBlox. They encourage young girls to get excited about engineering, physics, and other areas of science. While I sometimes think that their marketing may ruffle a few feathers (shamimg girls for liking princesses is sort of like shaming girls for not liking them, amiright?) I do think that their heart is in the right place by wanting to help the fields of math and science be more than a boys club. Here is their new ad:

What do you think? And if it looks familiar, here’s why.

This has been a great week for movie trailers! Especially from Disney! Check out two, all-new trailers from the House of Mouse:

And speaking of movies, I saw The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 last night and It. Was. AH-MAY-ZING! Seriously. I think this is the BEST one so far! The acting was great, the effects were so superb I fought back tears multiple times, and the sets totally blew what I had pictured out of the water! Even though I’ve read the book three times, my heart pounded, I covered my eyes, and hoped upon hope that things would work out (even though I knew the ending). Plus, J.Law’s rendition of The Hanging Tree was ON. POINT.
